A faster boot up seems to be an elusive goal more than a reality. However, you can decrease the time it takes to start up your computer in Windows by minutes in some cases. With just a few tweaks, you can get your boot up time down to 30 seconds and not 20 minutes. This article will give some quick and easy tips for faster boot up times.

Step 1: Hard Disk Check Up

Over time, your hard drives gets degraded both physically and digitally
. It’s important to monitor your drives health. An error or damaged sector can throw software loading into an infinite loop causing long load times. To check your drive health:

1. Click Start
2. Choose Computer
3. Right Click your Hard Drive
4. Choose Properties
5. Click Check Drives Health. After, the check up gives you repair options or a clean bill of health.
6. Restart to get a faster boot up.

Step 2: Eliminate Startup Delay

To get faster boot up speeds, you can cut the boot delay to 0. The delay is in place to allow your startup processes some breathing room during loading. Your default delay is 30 seconds. So, you can eliminate it for faster boot up times.

1. Open your Start menu.
2. Click Run
3. In the command screen, type msconfig
4. In the system configuration utility, click either BOOT tab.
5. In the boot menu, change the default setting for the Time Out from 30 to 5 seconds.

Step 3: Organize your Hard Drive

If you are looking for something in a messy room, naturally, it’s going to take you longer to find something. This is a good metaphor for a hard drive. Over time, filing system gets disorganized. Periodically, you need to reorganize this filing system on your hard drive. Luckily, Windows has a good utility called Defrag that will put your system in order.

1.Open the Start Menu
2. Click on My Computer
3. Right Click your C: drive or your hard drive image.
4. Scroll down to the Click Properties
5. In the Properties Menus, Open the “Tools” menu.
6. Choose Defragment.
7. In the Disk Deframenter menu. Click on Defragment

Step 4: Remove Excess Startup Programs

Most programs you add to your computer will opt to load when you startup your computer. Eventually you will rack up a load of programs that kill faster boot times. You need to reduce the startup programs. You can easily disable unnecessary startup programs. Here is how:

1. Open your Start menu.
2. Click Run
3. Type msconfig, click Enter
4. In the system configuration utility,click either services or startup tab.
5. Uncheck all programs that your are no longer want to run in the background.
6. Click OK

Second Earth Found? Location Is Promising

It is the first planet that NASA's Kepler mission has confirmed to orbit in a star's "habitable zone" -- the region around a star where liquid water, a requirement for life on Earth, could persist.

NASA announced a major milestone in the quest for life in the universe Monday: The discovery of another planet close enough to the sun it orbits to potentially support life.

Called Kepler-22b, the planet is about 2.4 times the radius of Earth and about 600 light-years away. And it orbits in the "habitable zone," the region of space just far enough from a star that liquid water could exist on the planet's surface -- a discovery could have profound implications in the quest for alien life, said Alan Boss, an astrophysicist with Carnegie Melon University.

“This discovery supports the growing belief that we live in a universe crowded with life,” Boss said. “Kepler is on the verge of determining the actual abundance of habitable, Earth-like planets in our galaxy."

The host star lies about 600 light-years away from us (1 light year is about 6 trillion miles) toward the constellations of Lyra and Cygnus, the researchers said, and is about 25 percent less luminous than the Sun. Kepler-22b orbits the star every 290 days, as compared with 365 days for the Earth, at a distance about 15 percent closer to its star than the Earth from the Sun -- close enough to suggest a pleasing, balmy temperature on the surface.

Such a temperature means liquid water could exist on the surface of the planet, something necessary for life as we know it -- and this new planet might well be not only habitable but perhaps even inhabited.

"This is a major milestone on the road to finding Earth's twin," said Douglas Hudgins, Kepler program scientist at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "Kepler's results continue to demonstrate the importance of NASA's science missions, which aim to answer some of the biggest questions about our place in the universe."

Interestingly, Kepler-22b was not photograph so much as implied. The discovery team, led by William Borucki of the NASA Ames Research Center, pored over photometric data from the NASA Kepler space telescope. They watched for tiny dimmings of star light -- dimmings that can only be measured by a highly specialized space telescope like Kepler -- which indicate that an Earth-size planet is transiting between us and a star.

Kepler requires at least three transits to verify a signal as a planet.

"Fortune smiled upon us with the detection of this planet," explained William Borucki, Kepler principal investigator at NASA Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, Calif., who led the team that discovered Kepler-22b."

Of the 54 habitable zone planet candidates reported in February 2011, Kepler-22b is the first to be confirmed.

The milestone will be published in an upcoming article in The Astrophysical Journal.

Acid Rain Damage

"Acid rain" means the deposition of acidic components such as sulphur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides, that is, sulphuric acid (H2SO4), ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) and nitric acid (HNO3) in rain, snow, fog, dew, or dry particles. Acid rain was first reported in Manchester, England way back in 1852. The excess acidity in rain is a result of air pollutants, mainly sulphur oxides and nitrogen oxide by the transformation of acidic components to acidic particles and vapours. Acid rain thus occurs when these acidic gases react in the Earth’s atmosphere with oxygen, water and other chemicals to form a variety of acidic compounds. Sunlight increases most of these reactions. The primary sources of these pollutants are cars, buses, trucks, trains, and industrial or power plants. A more precise term for Acid rain is ‘acid deposition,’ which can be classified in two parts: wet and dry deposition. Wet Acid deposition refers to acidic rain, snowfall and fog. As this acidic rain flows over the ground, it affects a range of animals, plants and living things. Dry Acid deposition refers to acidic gases and particles. This occurs when the wind blows the acidic particles and gases causes them to stick to cars, trees, homes and buildings. Acid rain is measured with the help of a scale known as “pH”. As acids release hydrogen ions, the acid content of a solution is based on the concentration of hydrogen ions and is expressed as "pH. When the ‘pH’ of a substance is low, it is more acidic, thus making the ‘pH’ of acidic rain, unusually low. Rain measuring between 0 and 5 on the pH scale is acidic and therefore called "acid rain." Acid rain affects the whole environment.  Polluted rain enters surface waters and permeates into the groundwater making the aluminium in the soil reactive which in turn leaches out the nutrients. This causes some fish to produce extra mucus around their gills, stopping ventilation. Acidic rain damages trees and plants through the decrease in vital soil nutrients.  Biodiversity in areas affected by acid rain is likely to be poor and therefore a great threat to humans in the long run. Acid rain accelerates weathering and deforestation along with serious acidic deposition in rivers, streams, and other water bodies. It not only disturbs the delicate ecological balance with faster corrosion process, it also causes buildings and monuments of historical value to erode with premature disintegration. In the U.S., Canada, and Europe, pollutant controls and emissions trading programs have significantly reduced the amount of sulfur dioxide from industrial sources. China, Eastern Europe and Russia are currently the regions most affected by acidification.

Dev Anand passes away; last rites in London

Mumbai: Screen legend Dev Anand died in his sleep on Sunday, leaving behind a legacy of classics like ‘Guide’ and ‘Hum Dono’. From colleagues to fans - everyone woke up to a rude Sunday morning shock as the news of the legendary actor Dev Anand passing away in London unfolded. Hindi cinema’s evergreen star who epitomised the suave, urban gentleman on screen, died after a cardiac arrest in London. He was 88. "His son Sunil came out of the bathroom and saw that Dev saab was not responding. He called the doctor, who said that he had a heart attack. He died at 10 in the night in London," Mohan Churiwala, Dev Anand's manager, said. According to Churiwala, the cremation will be held next week in London. "He will be cremated in London only after Tuesday. Cremation cannot take place till his daughter reaches there. His body is kept in a hospital right now," adding that his wife may also accompany her daughter.  He is survived by his wife, former actress Kalpana Karthik, a son and a daughter. In a career spanning over 65 years, Dev Anand worked in films like `Kala Pani`, ‘Guide`, `Hum Dono`, `Tere Ghar Ke Samne`, `Gambler`, `Jewel Thief`, `Hare Rama Hare Krishna` and `Ishq Ishq Ishq`. The stalwart was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2001. His last film `Chargesheet`, which released this year, was directed, written and produced by him. The film proved to be a dud at the Box Office, but his enthusiasm to contribute more to Hindi Cinema could not be dampened. A controversial personality, Dev Anand made films that were bold, something the Indian audiences could never expect from an Indian filmmaker. However, he was loved and adored for who he was - a happy-go-lucky man, who was full of life. Veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan expressed grief over the death of his senior colleague and took to the Twitter to say, “Had just met Dev Sahab at his premiere recently…he was weak but full of life(sic)”. Dev Anand seemed to have adopted the philosophy of the song "Main Zindagi ka saath nibhata chala gaya" from "Hum Dono", in real life too. His body of work speaks volumes about the man who was not only a great actor, but multi-tasker and a trendsetter.  If as an actor he proved his versatility with hits like ‘Tere Ghar Ke Samne’, ‘Jewel Thief’ and ‘Guide’, as a director he made a "zara hatke" movie ‘Hare Rama Hare Krishna’ that also gave Bollywood its first anglicised glamour icon in Zeenat Aman. He played a long innings in filmdom and saw ups and downs, but his never-say-die spirit reigned supreme. His fans and colleagues still say, "Abhi na jao chodkar ki dil abhi bhara nahin". The president said Dev Anand was a legendary film artist as well as a producer, director and writer who adorned Hindi cinema with great distinction. "He delighted Hindi cinema fans with his vivacious acting and as a popular romantic hero of his times." Recalling his movies, Patil said: "He shall always be remembered by a generation of film watchers for his exemplified acting in the movies -- `Taxi Driver`, `Munimji`, `Guide`, `Johny Mera Naam`, `Hare Rama Hare Krishna` and `Des Pardes`." "In his passing away, the film industry has lost a creative talent and a man who personified the spirit of graceful ageing with dignity," she added. The 88-year-old actor passed away after a massive cardiac arrest in London. The vice president said in his message that Dev Anand had an intense passion for films and continued with his artistic pursuits throughout his life. "The intensity and dedication that he brought to his acting, direction and production were indicative of his passion for the medium and millions of his admirers and fans have appreciated his work. His absence from the world of cinema is a terrible loss," he said. The prime minister said in his message that the country had honoured the legend with Padma Bhushan and several other awards, reflecting the impact and place he made for himself in the hearts of the film going public. "Dev Anand leaves behind an extremely rich repertoire of acclaimed films and his fans will forever remember the roles he essayed in film classics like `Guide`, `Hum Dono` and `Prem Pujari`," Singh said. "In the passing away of the legendary actor, the Indian film industry has lost one of its most endearing heroes," he added. The prime minister said Dev saab, as the actor was known in the film industry, was a great artist who "entertained generations for over five decades as the enduring romantic of Indian cinema". Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni said the legendary actor symbolised the creative genius of Indian cinema and his films had moving lyrics and melodious songs. "With his multi-faceted skills, he emerged as an iconic figure and evergreen star accepted across generations. As a filmmaker, he integrated modernism with traditional values," she said. "His films not only provided entertainment, they sensitised masses on contemporary social issues," she added. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Nitin Gadkari said in his message that the death of Dev Anand marks the end of an era in the Indian film industry. The iconic star is survived by his wife, former actress Kalpana Kartik, a son and a daughter.
