What are RSS feeds?

If you are new to the terms RSS or news feeds then you are in the right place, read on and find out a little more about them and how they may offer you or your business a new way of communicating.
RSS Feeds or news feeds are growing quickly and have become a major part of the Internet but many users don't understand what they are. They allow people to see when their favourite websites have added new content without actually having to go to that website, this can be done through simple, often free pieces of software named RSS readers.

The term RSS is short for "Rich Site Summary" but many people now refer to it as "Really Simple Syndication". It was mainly used by news groups and sites to quickly share and broadcast their news with people. This proved to be a huge benefit as not only could they reach a huge audience quickly, they found that user's integrated feeds into their own website, this has been shown by the success of the BBC news feeds.

How to start using RSS feeds for your self?

In order for you to receive the latest news on topics of interest to you, firstly, you need a newsreader to be able to view the RSS feed. There are many to choose from, some Internet browsers such as Firefox (our favourite at Blueprint IT) have a built in RSS reader but there are many stand alone pieces of software which are also free that will enable you to receive the latest news. We will use Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer 7 as examples because they are very simple to use.

Once you have chosen your newsreader your ready to pick up news. Simply choose the websites with your favourite information on and if they have a news feed then all you have to do is subscribe to it (this is almost invariably free). You can subscribe to any RSS feeds by clicking on the orange RSS feed button symbol, this will allow you to receive all the news from that feed. Alternatively, some websites may not provide you with the RSS feed button but may provide you with a link, simply copy and paste this link into your news reader and you will be able to pick up the feed.

The RSS Feed will present you with a page full of news from the website that you chose. You have the option to subscribe to the RSS Feed, this will act like a bookmark that will let you visit the page at any time.

Alternatively, if you decided to use a standalone RSS Feed reader, you will automatically download the latest news through the software each time you open it.

There are many benefits to RSS Feeds to both business owners, customers and general internet users, it's just a quick and simple way to share or view news from your favourite sources with the minimum of effort.

How SEARCH ENGINE works

A search engine operates, in the following order: 1) Crawling; 2) Deep Crawling Depth-first search (DFS); 3) Fresh Crawling Breadth-first search (BFS); 4) Indexing; 5) Searching.

Web search engines work by storing information about a large number of web pages, which they retrieve from the WWW itself. These pages are retrieved by a web crawler (also known as a spider) - an automated web browser which follows every link it sees, exclusions can be made by the use of robots.txt. The contents of each page are then analyzed to determine how it should be indexed. Data about web pages is stored in an index database for use in later queries. Some search engines, such as Google, store all or part of the source page (referred to as a cache) as well as information about the web pages, whereas some store every word of every page it finds, such as AltaVista. This cached page always holds the actual search text since it is the one that was actually indexed, so it can be very useful when the content of the current page has been updated and the search terms are no longer in it. This problem might be considered to be a mild form of linkrot, and Google's handling of it increases usability by satisfying user expectations that the search terms will be on the returned web page. This satisfies the principle of least astonishment since the user normally expects the search terms to be on the returned pages. Increased search relevance makes these cached pages very useful, even beyond the fact that they may contain data that may no longer be available elsewhere.

When a user comes to the search engine and makes a query, typically by giving keywords, the engine looks up the index and provides a listing of best-matching web pages according to its criteria, usually with a short summary containing the document's title and sometimes parts of the text. Most search engines support the use of the boolean terms AND, OR and NOT to further specify the search query. An advanced feature is proximity search, which allows you to define the distance between keywords.

The usefulness of a search engine depends on the relevance of the results it gives back. While there may be millions of Web pages that include a particular word or phrase, some pages may be more relevant, popular, or authoritative than others. Most search engines employ methods to rank the results to provide the "best" results first. How a search engine decides which pages are the best matches, and what order the results should be shown in, varies widely from one engine to another. The methods also change over time as Internet usage changes and new techniques evolve.

Most web search engines are commercial ventures supported by advertising revenue and, as a result, some employ the controversial practice of allowing advertisers to pay money to have their listings ranked higher in search results.

The vast majority of search engines are run by private companies using proprietary algorithms and closed databases, the most popular currently being Google, MSN Search, and Yahoo! Search. However, Open source search engine technology does exist, such as Dig, Nutch, Senas, Egothor, OpenFTS, DataparkSearch and many others.

Facebook Chat codes for Bold and Underlined text style

Facebook Chat codes for Bold and Underlined text style

Bored of old plain facebook chat's text style? Now you can make your text get bold and underlined!

I recently found out that there is now a possibility to format your chat messages, or parts of them. You can now do that using few facebook codes. You can make some text you write get bold, or you can underline it. Or both, of course. You may think it's as easy as a pie. Ù©(̃-̮̮̃-)Û¶ Or as peeing. But it really is a bit more complicated when it comes to not-so-smooth situatons. So here's a bite of how facebook chat works now.
 You write
*What* the _freek_ is *_THIS_*?
And get
What the freek is THIS ?
I'll try to explain you as much as I know in rules and examples. So here's what you have to know and consider, when writing messages with text highlighting.

Bold text

  • Put * asterisk (little star) at the start of the text piece you want to put in bold.
  • Put * at the end of that text.

Sample

 I *really* mean it.
Turns to
really mean it.

Underline in facebook chat

  • Put _ underscore symbol at the start of text piece you want to underline.
  • Put _ where that piece ends.

Sample

 I really _mean_ it.
Turns to
I really mean it.

Bold + underline

  • Put *_ symbol at the start of text piece you want to underline.
  • Put _* where that piece ends.
Note: you have to put "*_" first and then "_*". Not vice-versa.

Sample

 You *_mean_* it?
Turns to
You mean it?
*_x_* => x

But!
You _*mean*_ it?
or
You *_mean*_ it?
Will not.

Notes and warnings

This are important if you're going to use this codes a lot. If you are putting tags in the middle of the word – like "I_like_you" or "I*like*you" you'll stick with what you wrote. Text style won't change and those codes will stay. So here are the exclusions to keep in mind:

Exclusions

 Won't_underline_
Won't get*bold*
_Neither will_this one_
*__*

Stays the same after you send.
You may think that you have to have white spaces (" " what spacebar inputs) or message ends on sides. But no, not exactly. There are some ex. if you are trying to style the text that has some special characters on it's sides, instead of
 *facebook*&_chat_ =>
*facebook*&chat

_underline_&*bold* =>
underline&*bold*

Double? No trouble

You may include any amount of sentences. It'll get you something like this:
_no good_sentence_ *in chat* and _good one_
Will become
_no good_sentence_ in chat and good one

Italic text

As far as I know, Facebook Inc. haven't implemented any ability to make your text italic in facebook chat. And I don't think they will, cause most fonts look bad in italic. But anyway, if you'll find a way to input italic, please e-mail me the details.
